Podcast Review: 2 Dope Queens

By Darina Miroedova I hadn't really listened to a lot of podcasts, because I always thought podcasts were for adults who liked to listen to politics or something snore worthy like that. Luckily, I found a really hilarious comedy podcast by two girls, who call themselves "2 Dope Queens"! This series of podcasts stars two black girls who talk mainly about relationships, romance, sex, hair, race, and all in between. Listening to these two girls talk about things most can relate to makes you think that you're having a conversation with your best friends. They make jokes left and right, and you can hear the laugh track in the background sometimes. Even better, their music score selection is bomb, they play popular hip hop tracks and sometimes really catchy beats. Their episodes range from 5 minutes to over an hour, depending on their topic, and you never really know what you'll get a taste of in each episode! https://www.wnycstudios.org/shows/dopequeens

Podcast Review: Other People's Mail / Act 3: Saviors

Image
Photo Credit Wikimedia Commons  Amada44 By Madison Fassiotto This American Life has a variety of podcasts, but I listened to one of the staff favorites which showcased people's urge to look at other's mail. This episode was called Other People's Mail. Within the 58 minute podcast there was a prologue and 4 acts. I personally listened to the prologue and Act 3. Each act had a different speaker, narrator and setting. In Act 3: Saviors, it offered insight to the three mail sorting locations in the United States. At these three locations, they decipher 150,000 letters a day that were sent to the wrong address or to an address that doesn't exist. These people's jobs are to figure out where the envelope was supposed to end up. The entire act is describing some of the strange and common things they find being sent in the mail, as well as what their job entails. Throughout the entire podcast, upbeat music is used as a transition sometimes between speakers, or bet

Podcast Review: Serial

The podcast I listened to was Serial. I know a lot of people were doing it, but its still really good. Each episode is 54 minutes long, and so far there are 23 episodes split across 2 seasons. The podcast takes the form of several interviews, with narration tying everything together. The music makes it sound like storycorps or NPR, which to me makes it feel more authentic. It feels sort of like an autobiography of the journalist. I’m pretty sure the show isn’t really intended for anyone in particular.

PDX Media Day

By Madison Fassiotto Utilizing Social Media with Carly Langdon- Herff Jones Yearbooks In this workshop, we learned that social media is a powerful platform in which you can make announcements, reach out to the public, and raise awareness for anything you wish. One example was the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. By using a hashtag, people all around the world were able to participate, support and donate to the ALS foundation. I thought this was really interesting because most of the time people focus on the negatives of social media, but this showcased its many helpful aspects. Breaking Cool Stories By Connecting the Dots Between People & Documents with Dan Tilkin- KOIN 6 One thing I learned in this workshop was that there are plenty of websites that can give you all the information you need, without leaving your desk. Dan Tilkin wrote a piece on Cylvia Hayes that made national news. By utilizing websites that allowed for him to get basic information on where she might live, who she

Podcast Overview: How to do Everything

Image
By Ainsley Vondeling Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons, Moralist The podcast How to Do Everything is a series of 15-20 minute podcasts that bring a few topics to every episode. The two hosts take questions from listeners and then bring in experts to come up with answers. The topics are odd and unrelated, but typically pertain to subjects that any regular person would find intriguing. There are over 50 episodes and each of them cover quirky and varied ideas. From drinking tea to 17th century artwork, the alphabet to trash talk, this podcast offers entertaining content and enjoyable commentary. The podcast utilizes electronic music for transitions and quick topic changes to indicate their audience could be a busy commuter. Personally I found the relatability of the podcast entertaining and interesting. While listening to such short episodes listeners are able to easily commit without feeling that they are wasting their time.  The tone is easygoing and fun, so any person can fe

In the beginning, she talked a little bit about PR but didn’t explain it enough that I understood it. She also talked about a lot of past things in social media people don't use anymore, if she would have used more future/present tactics it may have been more interesting. Session 2: A Fresh Look at Social Justice Issues (Joanne Zuhl, Emily Green, Monica Kwasnik - Street Roots) I thought this was a pretty interesting presentation. They showed a good video telling the story of one of their workers in the community. In the video she says that she just wants to be heard, she was not a drug addict, she just had some unfortunate events that led to homelessness. They also talked about good ways to find interesting stories, using some of their in

Serial

Image
The logo of Serial, courtesy of Wikimedia Commons By Teal Scheffler The podcast Serial is made up of two seasons, each consisting of 12 episodes. Each episode is about an hour long, but there’s never a dull minute. The first season is about more than solving a murder; it’s about freeing a (supposedly) innocent man from jail. The podcast is made up of multiple interviews and narration. The background stories and transitions are told by the narrator. She does a great job at explaining the situation and keeping all of the information clear. The interviews get emotional, and the way they are conducted really draw the audience in. The whole story is incredibly intriguing, probably because it is such a sensitive topic. Music is used in Serial to set the mood and give listeners an idea of the kind of thing that will be said next. The music does a great job of foreshadowing the future events. While the podcast completely revolves around the solving of a murder, I think the audienc

Photo credit: courtesy of Wikimedia Commons; Crocodoodle By: Ben Abbariki Nature is a fascinating thing. There are still a great deal of things in this world we have yet to learn about. Personally one of the most mesmerizing things in our world are animals, specifically reptiles. With their unique patterns and coats accompanied by their scaly skin, they are just one of the world's unique creatures.  In this video crested gecko “Salzar” is captured sitting next to his freshly “dropped” tail. As Salzar sits there his owner films him as the tail moves in rapid succession. The dropped and moving tail is used as a defense mechanism, mainly against predators or perceived threats. The tail continues moving for long periods of time, so it's no surprise that it's so effective as a distraction. In the video, Salzar watches

My PDX Media Day

On Friday, I went to the Portland Media Day at the U of O campus in downtown. I had a lot of fun on that day. I got to learn about what I need to know and what is required to become a journalist. The first session I went to was Utilizing Social Media. This session talked about how social media plays a big role in journalism. It was led by Carly Langdon. She’s worked for Herff Jones Yearbook. At the session, Langdon talked about how some news companies use social media to help spread news. So instead of going on to the news websites to check on today’s top stories, you can see it on your social media pages. The second session I went to was how mobile messaging (and emojis) can enhance your journalism. What I learned from this session is communication can enhance your journalism and grow your audience. This session was run by Ben DeJarnette. He works for WhereBy.US. He talked about how people can text news to each other. The third session I went to was How to Write a Feature Story. In t

French Macaron Making

Image
Photo Credit Wikimedia Commons Mindmatrix By Madison Fassiotto Baker under the name of Sweetco0kiepie, remade a previous “How To Make French Macarons” video that had hit one million views, on the updated version she has over two million views. The video on how to make a generic flavored macaron is one of the young baker’s top hits. The simplistic recipe barely shows off Sweetco0kiepie talent and love of baking. The seemingly challenging task of making macarons has become less taunting in Sweetco0kiepie‘s hit video. The videography is pleasantly simple, and clear as to what step you must accomplish. It is easier to bake this delicacy, and separate the yolk from the egg white because she demonstrates it so effortlessly. Although, she did get one piece of the egg shell in the mix, but she laughed at herself showing how everyone is not the perfect baker. You can be imagining the chewy texture of the cookie and the gooey consistency as it falls off the spatula, as well as the taste o

-Bella Lo Transgender 101 (Bethany Grace Howe): In this workshop, Bethany Grace Howe talked about her life as a transgender woman.  She answered any questions we had, and I thought it was interesting to hear that in her early life, she wasn’t unhappy being a man.  She enjoyed her life, which may be something contradictory to what one would expect.  Bethany has a 7 year old daughter, whom she had to teach about her transition.  Bethany also has a wife and a very supportive family who accept her for who she is.  Breaking Cool Stories by Connecting the Dots Between People and Documents (Dan Tilkin): Tilkin is an investigative reporter for Koin 6 News.  In his workshop, he walked us through how he wrote the breaking news story about Cylvia Hayes’ fourth husband and their illegal property in Washington that had marijuana growing on it.  Tilkin showed the types of public and private databases he used to research Hayes and others who were connected to her.  He taught how he contact

By Angela Mashroutechi #1: Get to the Point   Telling your reader what your article is about using the nut graph A lot of people don’t read through the whole story, that’s one of the reasons to use the nut graph You have to tell them why your story is important. A good nut graph covers the five W’s and hopefully the H (because sometimes you don’t have the H of your story) To write the nut graph first YOU need to know what the story is about and why it’s important and to know that you need to be a good reporter and ask the right questions and investigate properly #2: Make it Complicated Every story need a complication otherwise it’s not interesting to the reader A story needs three important things: Complication-resolution, character arc, empathy LIFE is a series of complications (and that isn’t always bad) We watched parts of a documentary about a professional snowboarder that had an accident during one of his practices for the olympics (as an

A Day in the Life of Ava Jules

The introduction for this video is a montage. Ava goes from a quick intro to her talking, and then to a group of clips that go along to music with a calming yet fun beat. It's no question why Jules has 214,000 subscribers. Her channel, called Ava Jules, is filled with videos that make you feel happy due to her bright smile and large, vibrant personality. This video in particular makes me feel calm with the Hawaii views and awesome music that sounds to me like Hawaiian music. In just 5 minutes it is filled with laughs and beautiful views. You take in a day of another person's life. It's a video that just makes you smile and giggle. Her other videos are good too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ag3Gfg99VHs&feature=youtu.be

Thoughts on PDX Media Day

Image
By Ainsley Vondeling Illustration credit: Wikimedia Commons, Newspaper_Cover.svg: Source works and User:Tkgd2007 Utilizing Social Media- with Carly Langdon This workshop mostly explained what PR was compared to advertising, telling us how PR is storytelling to bring a brand or product to the audience. We learned how having a target audience is important so that your communication plan is clear and effective. A communication plan is built on communicating an idea, building the plan through statistics, tactics, and strategy. We also talked about how social media can be used to engage with your audience, looking at the ways that different companies utilize social media.  A Fresh Look at Social Justice Issues- with Joanne Zuhl, Emily Green, and Monica Kwasnik I really enjoyed this workshop, the speakers all worked at Street Roots and held different positions there. We talked a lot about the ways that Street Roots helps the community, as well as the different ways the write

A daily makeup routine

Image
Photo Credit Wikimedia Commons Eva Rinaldi  By Teal Scheffler In an attempt to share her daily makeup routine with the YouTube community, Speakingofsarah shows the camera how she does her makeup. Unfortunately, the music is too loud and distracting and the lights are just too bright. The actual video was very nice because it was a step by step tutorial of her makeup. The products she used were good, I suppose, if you are into makeup. Although the video was very short, her editing made it very clear what she was doing the whole time. The final look of her makeup was not too dramatic  and very pleasant to see. Overall, the video was definitely concise and to the point. I really enjoyed the visual aspects of the video and the actual makeup look that was the main purpose. She neglected to tell viewers the names of the products she used, which people probably would have found helpful. The music was also too dramatic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPjBUs-KsOA
