PDX Media Day

Utilizing Social Media with Carly Langdon- Herff Jones Yearbooks
In this workshop, we learned that social media is a powerful platform in which you can make announcements, reach out to the public, and raise awareness for anything you wish. One example was the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. By using a hashtag, people all around the world were able to participate, support and donate to the ALS foundation. I thought this was really interesting because most of the time people focus on the negatives of social media, but this showcased its many helpful aspects.

Breaking Cool Stories By Connecting the Dots Between People & Documents with Dan Tilkin- KOIN 6
One thing I learned in this workshop was that there are plenty of websites that can give you all the information you need, without leaving your desk. Dan Tilkin wrote a piece on Cylvia Hayes that made national news. By utilizing websites that allowed for him to get basic information on where she might live, who she is associated with and phone numbers, he was able to figure out she was growing marijuana in Okanogan, Washington. I found this workshop incredibly interesting because he was so interested in his job and it was fun to learn how to be an investigative reporter.

Covering LGBTQ+ Issues in High School with Bethany Grace Howe- SOJC
In this workshop, I learned that it is important to stop being cliche and simply writing about the stories and hardships of the LGBTQ+ community. Those a part of the LGBTQ+ community are people too, so instead, Bethany Grace Howe said to find something deeper and unique about those who you interview. I thought this workshop was very interesting because it brought a new perspective and it was really important to hear.

Podcasting, Radio, and the Power of Audio Storytelling with Damian Radcliffe- SOJC
During this workshop I learned that podcasts are fast growing and are becoming more important to people. Some podcasts achieve certain moods and certain audiences. There are some that are meant to be funny while others are poetic and serious. I thought this one was really interesting because we heard some of the podcasts, and one in particular someone put a cartoon to go with it and it was really funny. Podcasts have always been really interesting to me, I always struggle to find one that is captivating. After this workshop it made me want to listen to them more.

Truth, Justice and the American Way: A Primer for Mild Mannered Reporters with Tom Henderson- McMinnville News Reporter
This workshop talked about stepping out of your comfort zone. I learned that when you are reporting your personality shifts, and you become a much bolder and confident version of yourself. Tom Henderson made this workshop very interesting because he had hundreds of stories to tell about how he was put into uncomfortable situations but had to overcome his shyness to complete his job.
