Eder Campuzano and The Oregonian!

Eder Campuzano and the Oregonian
Hana Teherani-Ami

On March 1 our mass communications class went on a field trip to the Oregonian, where we were led on a tour by one of the reporters, Eder Campuzano. Eder Campuzano is the education reporter for the Oregonian. Before becoming the education reporter, he was part of the trending team and specialized in covering stories about protests after protests after protests. His goal when becoming the education reporter was to “elevate the voices of students.” Last year, he covered protests about youth against violence and did some interesting pieces about Fortnite and parks that students are suddenly flocking to.

His other goal was to incorporate his Spanish into his reporting because of the students and parents who have been historically underrepresented by media in Portland.

Eder Campuzanos interest in journalism began in high school when he first started working at the newspaper. After graduating high school in 2005, he attended The Oregonians High School Journalism Institute. He then became the Grants Pass Daily Courier county government reporter. And soon after he was hired at the Oregonian!

On the tour of the Oregonian, I was insanely underwhelmed due to the amount of people who were actually working in the building. I had this image in my head that a newsroom was always busy and people were scrambling around trying to make the deadlines, but it seemed as though everyone was out reporting and getting their stories.

I did like how they organized the space in a way that intelligently separated some beats from others, but put others closer together so that they worked together.

I’m extremely grateful to Eder Campuzano for taking his time to talk to us and walk us around the building.

  1. I like how you chose to talk more about Eder, it made the post more interesting than just a description of the tour.
