Puerto Rico’s Christmas in the Dark - NBC
The people of Puerto Rico have hit some tough times. NBC follows a family who live in the mountains of the island and have lost all power and most water because of Hurricane Maria. But instead of feeling sorry for themselves, these people, like most on the island, have been brought closer to each other after the hurricane and will not lose appreciation of their lives together.
The use of music in this piece makes the story just haunting enough to tug at your heartstrings. It is masterfully played, and quiet enough to make a viewer focus on the people in the video while they can still hear the music in the back of their mind. When highlighted, the music played by the family in unity is calming, showing that life still goes on in wake of what has happened. It’s also very significant that they all play together.
Anecdotes from the members of the family of how they are suffering make people feel for them- not necessarily creating empathy,
but this is what makes the story so sad: the picture of a family who has lost everything (totally cut off from regular privileges and necessities). It is a story of heartbreak, yes, but it is also a story of people and a family brought closer together by a horrible tragedy. The story of that someone could find light in a place without it. -Cole Pressler https://www.nbcnews.com/video/puerto-rico-s-christmas-in-the-dark-after-hurricane-maria-1122004547554 ![]() |
