Editorial Cartoon- NFL vs NBA (Protest over right vs. Money over right)

I created this editorial cartoon because I want to use some of my hobbies and personalities into what I strongly think this issue has been talked upon a lot. I have always loved sports as a kid and controversial sport topics has always been an interest for me. I think that sport politics like the cartoon I created that involves Houston Rockets in support of Hong Kong protest and Colin Kaepernick, a prominent NFL activists known for kneeling for National Anthem should be heard among the public because of how it contrasts together. I also tend to use some humor in my cartoon because I want it to be simple, funny, and original at the same time.

Some techniques I used for this cartoon is irony, symbolism, exaggeration, and labeling. I drew a line to make it into ½. Left side I put NFL and used a fist as Colin’s head for exaggeration. Kneeling is a symbolism for Colin protesting for his human rights. The labeling is the NFL name on the fist which can give you a better look for the cartoon. On the right, we have an NBA logo as labeling. The shoe also with China is labeled as $$$ meaning that NBA does it for the money and Rocket’s opinion on protest can lose their deal with China. The exaggeration is the person kneeling down kissing the boot is to show how much they ‘praise’ China.

Some things I learned drawing the editorial cartoon is I become more conscious of these issues that has been talked upon a lot. I realized that drawing cartoons is to persuade viewers. I learned that you incorporate some of your opinions with the current event to make a point in your topic.

Comments

  1. I like how you described your personal interest in the issue and broke down how you used the different techniques to make your process clear and detailed. However, and this may be a formatting issue, but the image of the cartoon does not appear.

  2. I really enjoyed how you did your editorial cartoon on something you enjoyed and were passionate about. However, you might want to go back and check because the cartoon doesn't appear for me either.
