Two worlds integrate into one. With parents from two completely different countries, Sofia Crespo has experienced twice the culture compared to many other people. Through experiencing the diverse foods and holidays of Puerto Rico and Holland she has gained a greater knowledge of each culture. As someone who is biracial, these aspects of her life are very important to her and her family.
“My mom is Dutch and my dad is Puerto Rican, so I have the Latino culture and the white/European culture,” said Crespo. “I grew up listening to English, Spanish, and Dutch. I started speaking Spanish when I was really young. Then I got into Spanish immersion and that broadened my horizon of the culture.”
Crespo experienced each culture from a very young age and started to understand them each individually. Her family’s background and knowledge of each culture and the lessons taught in Spanish immersion classes also helped her learn more about her heritage on her Puerto Rican side.
“I learned about it [her culture] from my family, obviously, but being in school and learning about the culture was really cool too because you could see the different Latino cultures from different regions of the world,” said Crespo.
Each culture brings special and important things into her life with their diverse foods and traditions.
“A lot of the food they [Dutch] have is Indonesian,” said Crespo. “A lot of the main music in Puerto Rico is reggaeton which is spanish rap/pop and then there's also salsa. The culture is very diverse and it has a bunch of ethnicities,” she added.
She says that being biracial has made her more aware of the world in various ways.
”I get more exposure to different cultures. I think I’m more aware of issues in the world because it does affect half of my family,” said Crespo.
Crespo says that she is proud to be biracial and bicultural and that they are very important things to her. She enjoys participating in the cultures including the foods, traditions, and holidays that are involved in her life.
Having two cultures in her life has made her more aware of the things that are happening in the world and she feels more culturally educated. Crespo says that culture is a very important thing to have in your life.
“Culture is a very rich thing to be valued.”

I love how you focused on the cultural aspect of her life and went deep into that one part of her. Also, I like how you used her quotes throughout the article.
ReplyDeleteThe use of quotes was very effective in this article and I thought it was very interresting how you talked about her different culures.
