PDX Media Day: Sports and Portrait Photography

By: Rowan Budlong

PDX Media day, on March 8th, provided me with many opportunities to learn about media and journalism. I decided to attend a presentation by Craig Mitchelldyer called Sports and Portrait Photography. The whole event took place in the White Stag Building on the waterfront in downtown Portland. PDX Media Day is put on for student journalists to learn about media and journalism techniques. A series of lectures, presentations, and visuals are put together to educate students.

Mitchelldyer is a freelance photographer who works closely with the Portland Timbers. His other work includes Adidas, Nike, Intel, law firms, financial companies, weddings and, special features for magazines. After photographing in Portland for 20 years, Mitchelldyer has had features in “National and international publications including the USA Today, Getty Images, Reuters, Associated Press, the New York Times, Newsweek, Outdoor Life, Globe and Mail, Daily Mail, Golf World, Sports Illustrated, ESPN the Magazine, Athlon Sports Annuals, and nearly every newspaper in the USA” (Mitchelldyer Photography).

I learned a variety of different techniques for photography. Mitchelldyer taught us the steps to composing a good picture. These included things like background awareness, lighting awareness, telling a story, as well as how to work the camera to our advantage with shutter speeds, and manual versus automatic function. I appreciated all the examples he gave during the presentation. He made everything clear and put together a nice slideshow that was easy to understand. Mitchelldyer answered questions very well, was very personable, and well rounded. I also appreciate how he relates to people so much in the way he takes photographs.
