In the fast-paced world of YouTube and online media, videos that stand out are often less as immediately exciting. The YouTube video “1141 Damselfly hunting mayfly and mosquito larvae HD” from the account Nature1upclose is a prime example. Its contents are exactly what both the video and channel’s titles suggest. The eight-minute video features underwater closeups of a multitude of damselflies and mayfly and mosquito larvae accompanied by the white noise that comes with sub aquatic filming. It acts as an educational film, shedding light on some of the interesting happenings of a part of the world often overlooked.

The account itself has many videos similar to this one, ranging from bees interacting with flowers to the hatching of bird eggs. Its seven year history of silent macro videography provides to its 41,000 subscribers an archive of educational wildlife few other YouTube accounts can boast.

Although the videos’ silence combined with some of their content can be eerie at times, it allows the viewer to focus on the subject, which all but makes up for the eeriness with its intrigue.
