Wildflowers On My Mind- A Sketchbook Entry
By Mei Xu
Within the beauty of the video, speaks the beauty of words from Annabelle. Now a sophomore at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Annabelle has an array of Youtube videos through the username CatCreature. A majority of her videos are vlogs, with an occasional surprise of montages and heart-warming readings of her personal messages to herself and her viewers.
Annabelle uses her personally developed artistic skill merged with clips of her travels to explain her thoughts in a visual perspective, one that most people don’t gravitate to. Throughout her video titled “Wildflowers on My Mind”, she shows the audience her delicate strokes of her paintbrush onto a plain canvas. In the background Annabelle speaks of her family, focusing on the strained relationship she has with her biological father. Her tender, delicate voice steals the spotlight as she talks about life and the pathways people go down that sometimes they have no control over. Her voice accompanied with the soft piano music, motions of brush strokes and montage of her driving out into the wilderness creates a warm, safe setting.

Annabelle never lets the visuals of her videos take away from her message and overall theme. She finds the simpler things in life to be just as fulfilling as the complicated ones. Annabelle isn’t afraid to be vulnerable to her audience by letting them know the good and bad parts of her life. Her videos are a break from the dramatic side of YouTube and features positivity and reassurance that everything happens for a reason.
