The Mystery of Webdriver Torso

Of all the strange, unexplained phenomena that happens on the internet, none of it is more
mysterious than "Webdriver Torso." This surreal YouTube account puts out a video every ten minutes,
each with a random string of letters and numbers for the title. Each of these videos contains 10
seconds of red and blue rectangles flashing on screen, while surreal notes are played in the
background.
Nobody had ever heard of it until somebody stumbled across it, and began spreading its
mysterious identity. It wasn’t long before Webdriver Torso had amassed over 100,000 subscribers.
Whoever or whatever was behind the channel began to realize this surge in publicity, and began to
mess around with the curious YouTube community. In this video, it starts out not unlike a normal
Webdriver Torso video. Things change at 0:04 in the video, however. One of the rectangles is
replaced with a red silhouette of Rick Astley, a 1990’s musician, who internet users use to troll
people.
Eventually, Google revealed that the channel was just an automated program
used to test YouTube’s video quality, and in early 2017, Webdriver Torso posted its last video.

  1. This is a really interesting idea about how some mysterious, somewhat creepy things can have a really simple explanation.
