Storytelling: When I Kissed a Dead Fish

By: Tara Subramaniam

As my class started the storytelling unit, I decided to choose the strangest story I could think of: when I kissed a dead fish. For some context, I was only about five. From unburying the fish to washing my hands, it was fun to tell the story to new people compared to my family who has already heard it millions of times.

Telling the story without notes made me connect to the audience though I already had some experience with this in Speech and Debate. It was positive and I learned that I prefer to memorize speeches as my flow of words is smoother. It was fun to hear other peers' crazy and amazing stories, and I got to know them more. This unit definitely helped the class grow as a community.

All in all, the storytelling unit was positive, though what would be even more fun is to act out a story instead of telling your own.
