Elizabeth Warren- Editorial Cartoon
This cartoon depicts Elizabeth Warren standing next to a burning Earth. Earth is shown with several of the issues that have happened lately. Warren is saying “I have a plan for that,'' which is her campaign statement. I decided to make this cartoon because though Warren promises that she has a plan, we don’t really know if she does. How can one person have a solution for everything that’s been happening? How can she solve climate change, poverty, school shootings, etc? Warren’s claims seem far fetched, and this cartoon calls it out. However. I chose not to show Warren as being on Earth and instead to be in a bubble off to the side, because a lot of these issues do not affect rich politicians. For example, Warren does not suffer from poverty, unlike 12.35 of the United States’ population.
The process of drawing this cartoon started with the thought that Warren probably doesn’t have a plan for everything; but how can I call that out? I decided to use hidden meanings to show that. Firstly, I used exaggeration in the sense that the Earth is not literally burning the way I showed that it is. There are parts of the Earth that are on fire, but the entire planet is not actually burning. That represents climate change, and how our planet is heating up and how pressing this issue is. I used labeling in this cartoon as well when I labelled the “2020” sign that is propped up next to the democratic candidate. I also labeled things like “school” and like “U.S. Border’ to clearly show the audience what I’m trying to show.
Something I’ve learned from making this cartoon is that your idea of the format can change a lot from your first draft to the final product. Though the general idea stays the same, the format a lot of times changes to emphasize the main idea. It is also important to have many ideas so that if one fails, it’s easy to get back on track and to make a final without spending time thinking of a whole new idea.
I like your idea and the way you provided your insight and opinion without being inappropriate. Your metaphors, like putting Warren in a bubble, are creative and support our point of view well. I only wish I would be able to see your actual drawing more clearly, but I liked your description.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you used hidden meanings in your cartoon to show how you feel and express your opinion. Although the description of your cartoon helped a lot, I would have liked a clearer picture of your cartoon.
