Editorial Cartoon-School Shootings

By: Ava Rispler

My editorial cartoon is about school shootings and how sudden they could happen. In my cartoon, there is a school shooting that has just happened and students are very shaken up from this event. During and after the school shooting, one girl put on her bullet-proof vest, another little girl was just glad to see her dad and had no clue what had just happened and one boy’s mom is now making him carry a gun from now on.
The reason why I decided to pick this topic for my editorial cartoon is because I used to live 15 minutes away from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. At Marjory Stoneman Douglas, there was a major school shooting that happened very abrupt. I didn't realize how serious these types of things are until I realized how close to home this shooting was.
I used exaggeration to make my editorial cartoon. I did this because most kids shouldn’t wear a bullet proof vest to school or carry a gun, but I wanted to make an impact on how big school shootings are. During the process of creating my cartoon, I learned about many current events going on in our world today. I also learned that there are many perspectives to one current issue, and you don’t have to use that perspective through talking or writing.
