Editorial Cartoon : Pro-Life Hypocrisy

by Eirini Schoinas

Many states, specifically ones with right-wing politicians in power, have been recently trying to pass abortion bans, and I think as a young woman this issue is especially important to me. I wanted to highlight one of the many hypocrisies surrounding abortion and share my opinion on the. Ultimately, this issue is so impactful that it felt especially important to comment on.

I started by sketching this cartoon along with a couple others trying to get my ideas down. I used references for the different things I drew but would pretty quickly stop looking at them. I tried to mostly fill the space. I decided to keep it black and white so the colors would not distract. I used symbolism, with the elephant as well as a little bit of exaggeration. I made sure to use some labels in order to make it less confusing.

I learned a lot about the artistic process as well as how to make a carton understandable. I had to try to make my cartoon understandable and make sense. I actually had some trouble trying to make an immediately understandable cartoon but I used persuasive techniques to get my point across. I had to take this cartoon from beginning to end and learned from the whole process.

  2. I'm unable to see the cartoon and your artist response could be improved. Interseting and important topic and your explantion of symbols was good, but I feel you could do more.
