California Wildfires: Editorial Cartoon

By: Abby Yium

I created this editorial cartoon to describe and show the events around the California wildfires that are happening right now. Trump is threatening to cut the funds to help fight the wildfires, even though that would do more damage than is happening right now. Trump isn’t in California and isn’t experiencing what is happening or what it’s like to live in California right now, so he shouldn’t be cutting the funds that could help control the wildfires.

The first technique I used was irony. I drew Trump in a box that says Fire Proof Technology. His box is right beside the California wildfires, so even though he is surrounded by the fires, he would never be hurt by the fires. The second technique that I used was labeling. I labeled the hose that was watering the wildfires as the California wildfire funds. The pair of scissors that Trump is holding is about to cut the hose and stop the wildfire funds.

I learned more about Trump and the California wildfires, as I looked for a topic or idea to draw the editorial cartoon about. I didn’t now that Trump was planning on cutting the wildfire funds until I researched the topic. I also learned about the different techniques that artists use when creating an editorial cartoon. I never knew all the symbols and techniques that artists put into their editorial cartoons.

  3. I enjoy the topic and most of the aristry. I didn't quite understand that it was a hose, maybe some water droplets colored blue might help.
