Short-form Content Can Go A Long Way
This is a fun, relaxed video about not wanting to go to a party, whether you should,
and the things you can do instead, wrapped up into a cozy bundle of light-hearted
music made by a talented person. In it, a young woman thinks about whether or not it’ll
be worth it to go to a party with her friends, decides not to, and stays at home taking some
valuable me-time instead. The lyrics are soft and catchy and the visuals are soaked in
soothing images and comforting soft light. It’s a soothing song that’s easy to enjoy, and bops
along, filled with warm charm and dry wit.
I like this because of its chill atmosphere and content that easily relates to many people.
I think most people can think of a time when their friends and family were making plans and
they would rather sit inside taking a bath or watching a movie and eating snacks by
themselves. I also like its non-judgemental nature. The creator is saying, ‘It’s fine not to
participate all the time. Being alone can be good too.’ This is a good message which
acknowledges that there are many ways to enjoy yourself, and time alone to do what you
want can be refreshing.
This video fits into a larger trend of short-format skits based on a single-concept idea that is
easy to relate to and quickly enjoy. These skits have been around for a very long time. This
is the kind of thing you can find on SNL, or made by small creators all the way back at the
birth of YouTube. Simple jokes or spoofs extended out for a few minutes are a staple of online
comedy, and have been made about almost every common scenario, from cats tearing around
the house in the middle of the night, or getting a flat tire, to parody music videos of the latest
hit single. While most are cynical, full of quick-talking jabs and two-second cuts, this song is
a step removed, choosing to be joyful and take its time to express its message.
