Erick Oh, a UCLA School of Theatre Film and Television student leaves everyone blown away with his multiple award winning short film, “Heart”. This CGI film speaks to selfishness, love, greed, and the quest for self-fulfillment in our society. In the beginning, a man finds his heart and wears it proud on his head which represents self-discovery and confidence. Shortly, another man who is very deformed asks for his heart, but becomes violent when he does not receive it. After the two men fight for the heart, a woman comes into the frame. The first man is aggressive and angry towards the woman and he realizes that he has upset the woman with his violent nature. When the first man and women share his heart, they are happy and at peace. The second man comes back, seeking the heart which creates a monster of greed and emptiness. The first man loses his heart to the monster, which attracts more and more people, seeking the heart for fulfillment. In the end, everyone dies and nobody wins the heart due to the inability to create one's own love and happiness instead of stealing it from others.
The dramatic orchestra builds throughout the video as the characters become more and more violent and greedy. This brilliant tactic represents conflict building and he uses eerie sound effects that match the mood. Oh’s clever choice to not use verbal dialogue tells the audience to pay attention to the visual and instrumental aspects of the video rather than the verbal. This video may be confusing to younger viewers at first, but after watching it a few times, the plot becomes clearer. Overall, this compelling video will make you think about your own personal connections to it and the concept of living in a dog-eat-dog world.
“Heart” by Erick Oh is a very intriguing video that will interest all viewers and teaches a very important lesson. This powerful, black and white CGI film teaches us to find self-fulfillment ourselves and to check our selfish and egotistical tendencies. It will pull at the heartstrings and will make you notice love, loss, greed, and gratitude in your life.
