NPR Tiny Desk Concert: Tyler the Creator
Today you can look into the rap industry and see time and time again rap artists calling themselves iconic, like something that’s
never been heard before. Though whenever someone calls themselves iconic, it immediately defeats the
purpose. If an artist was truly an individual, they wouldn’t have to say it; it would show through their actions instead. Tyler Okonma
is one of those unique artists who doesn’t have to say that they’re something different.

Having watched many NPR tiny desk concerts, Tyler’s was by far the most unique. He connects with his audience, integrating
someone’s name into a freestyled verse of ‘boredom,’ and at the end asks the musicians to say their name, where they came from,
and a fun fact about themselves. He enjoys himself through the entire video, smiling throughout the songs and constantly
communicating with the audience, as if he was playing some instruments with his friends at home.

Something that isn’t generally found through the other NPR desk concerts is personality. Watching Tyler’s, his thoughts and
character shines through his expressions, his words, and isn’t afraid to be himself. He really took the time to talk to and about the
band he played with, instead of merely introducing them and ending the video.

With the warm lights and smiling artists, this tiny desk concert brought me to be lost inside his music, and inspired me to be just like
Tyler when I grow up.
