Did you think laser rifles were only science fiction? Think again! The real reason that we don’t
use laser guns, of course, is not because they’re decades ahead of our time, but because they’re
highly impractical and can blind the user. This hasn’t stopped hobbyists from creating their own
death rays for their own amusement.

Styropyro is a YouTuber who builds high powered lasers from salvaged dvd players, as well as
whatever he can find on eBay. In this video, he shows off a laser that puts out 5 watts. That might not
sound like much, (a light bulb is 120 watts-ish), but when the light is compressed into a laser, it
becomes much more deadly. For comparison, a typical laser pointer is only 1mW, making his laser
sword 6,000 times more powerful.

In the video, he uses his creation to burn clean through paper bags, light matches, and even
ignites a chunk of wood. If you look at the rest of his channel, you’ll see similar experiments. Of
course, styro acknowledges that safety is an important issue, and in each of his videos, he wears
safety goggles to avoid permanent blindness.
